Blockbuster News 2 - Major Employer rejects contract offers to DEAs
Remember last July? Remember Countrywide Surveyors withdrawing their full-time contract offers for HIs and letting those they had already recruited go?
Remember the delay announced in May? Remember energy-assessors.com announcing they were shutting the doors affecting 1000 DEAs as that no further investment in this company is considered appropriate at this uncertain time?
Its yet more bad news from one of the major employers: Wolton Surveyors, wholly owned by SpicerHaart, who are the largest privately-owned estate agency chains in Europe (so big they are considered a corporate by other agents) has decided its had enough too! No longer will they retain an employed DEA capacity, they have cancelled the already postponed contract offers and will simply source DEAs through those who are self-employed. Yet more devastating news for those who with less than 10 days to go now find their positions in serious jeopardy and seeking a new accreditation scheme. The irony of it all is that Woltons are still advertising to recruit Home Inspectors!
Want to know why I think this has happened? See Blockbuster News 3. Here's a letter I hope you did not receive.
Dear X
Further to the change in HIPs/EPC legislation, Spicerhaart Group have undertaken a review of our business within the area. Consequently we write to confirm that we intend to establish our DEA division on an alternative basis to that originally discussed with you.
We have taken the decision not to directly employ DEA's but instead offer you the opportunity to work as a consultant to the group. We appreciate that you might initially find this decision disappointing but this has substantial benefits for both you and us if you decide to accept our alternative offer.
The benefits of this to you are as follows:
1: We propose to offer you a consultancy contract with the guarantee of work within a defined post code area, undertaking EPC's for Spicerhaart Group estate agency branches and access to other additional work we will be panelling.
2: We propose to pay you a fee of £60 per EPC, in accordance with the agreement. This will give you the opportunity of earnings of around £60,000 - 70,000 per annum, assuming that you undertake a typical full time workload.
3: You will have complete control over your workload and as a self employed consultant will be able to accept instructions from other sources.
Unfortunately this means that our offer of full time employment as a DEA is therefore withdrawn.
The quoted figures of £60,000 - 70,000 are utterly inaccurate and misleading and shows this situation to be disgraceful as it look. I can only assume that the same person responsible for these figures is also the same person responsible for their business plan that has taken so long to revisit- I'll keep it polite and suggest they 'aren't very good'. To all DEA/HIs considering the offer of £60- just say "No" as this is not a sustainable figure for DEA/HIs to carry out EPCs for thats for sure, talk to any self-employed individual and get their advice. I do not believe that any more than 6 DEAs will carry out 1000 EPCs in 2008 but do feel free to prove me wrong, its not about how many you can do in a day its all about how many you can do in quiet times like November-January for example.
